On November 3, the Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department Baseball and Softball Committee presented Caleb Kimmel with the 43rd Annual Charles W. Wilt, Sr. Award. The Wilt Award was established in 1966 in memory of Charles W. Wilt, Sr., a member of the Fort Wayne Baseball and Softball Commission who passed away at the age of 55 in 1965. Wilt was manager of the G.E. Club and was very active on the commission and in the promotion of youth, semi-pro baseball and adult softball for more than 30 years.
The award is presented by Wilt's son, Chuck and son-in-law Dick Mueller, to the person or persons selected by the committee, recognizing their contribution to the advancement of baseball and softball in Fort Wayne.
According to Jack Massucci, chair of the selection committee, Caleb Kimmel was an outstanding choice for this year's award. He is a 1999 graduate of Homestead High School and a 2003 graduate of Valparaiso University, where he played varsity baseball. He has been owner of Between the Lines, a special-events planning company with a focus on creating quality athletic and recreation programs for youth and families in Fort Wayne.
Since 2000, Kimmel has owned and led Between the Lines to national prominence through the organization of the Hoosier Classic Summer Baseball Tournaments, which has brought hundreds of teams and thousands of players to Fort Wayne from all over the United States and Canada. These tournaments have attracted major college and professional scouts. Kimmel has also been responsible for providing year-round baseball training and camp opportunities for youth at the Ashe Center that serves not only hundreds of local youth but also youth from around the country. Kimmel said he has great hopes that the Ashe Center will help make Fort Wayne a national center for baseball training and development of youth
